.....a Norwegian company manufacturing some of the most advanced robots on Earth
The days Carter remembers, when saturation divers worked manually on the underwater well head, are gone. “It was a guy in a bell, at three atmospheres of pressure, picking up stuff and clomping around in a suit like a spaceman.” Remotely operated vehicles, or ROVs, are the kings now: “They have these incredibly sophisticated robotic arms that can flick switches and work spanners. Andit’s all being viewed and controlled by a guy in an air-conditioned cabin — in a Star Trek chair with 15 monitors. It’s amazing.” It is even more amazing once you've spoken to Kenneth Søndervik. The vice-president of sales and marketing at Robotic Drilling Systems (RDS), Søndervik works for a Norwegian company manufacturing some of the most advanced robots on Earth— thanks to a few robots that are currently off it. He explains that since RDS signed an information-sharing agreement with NASA, the company has been able to use the Curiosity Mars rover as a case study to develop its own technologies, especially utilising the autonomous decision-making systems built into the Mars rover.
